There is No Tomorrow!

“The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is today."

— Chinese Proverb

Dear A,

I was scrolling YouTube last Thursday when a clip from Rocky III popped into my feed. There was Apollo Creed - played by the late, great Carl Weathers - in Rocky’s face, sweat flying, voice raised, demanding urgency: “There is no tomorrow!”

The classic movie line (and popular meme) felt less like a scene and more like a direct message.

Four months ago, I was in peak shape. I trained for a half marathon while lifting consistently. I hit the "CrossFit Total" of 1,000 pounds across bench, squat, and deadlift. I proved to myself that strength and endurance could still coexist.

Then I took “a few days off.”

You know the math. A few days became a week. A week became a month. Suddenly, it was four months of zero workouts and a steady rotation of pizza, cheeseburgers, and ice cream. The whole time, I told myself, I’m still in great shape. Memory was doing all the heavy lifting. I knew I could always get back into exercise "tomorrow."

Until Apollo showed up.

That line cut through every excuse I’d been making. I had been treating my health like a savings account - something I could withdraw from later. But fitness doesn’t work like that. Strength fades. Endurance slips. Energy declines. Not dramatically at first… just quietly.

Someday is a disease that will take your dreams to the grave with you."

- Tim Ferris

The past 72 hours back in the gym have been humbling. Weights feel heavier. Runs feel longer. Healthy meals take intention (even during Super Bowl Sunday). But soreness is proof I’m alive. Effort is proof I’m not done.

As we get older, we start to understand something we used to ignore: every sunrise is a gift. Time isn’t guaranteed. Health isn’t permanent. Strength isn’t stored - it’s earned daily.

There is no “I’ll start tomorrow.” There is no “next week.”

There is only today... and today, we train!

Stay safe and vigilant!
